 2018 Preview

Hillcrest completed the 2017 season with a 14-1 record. Last year Hillcrest captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-1 record. It was the first region championship for the Jaguars since the 1999 season. The Jaguars reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 3A State Championship by defeating Randolph County at the Alabama Super Seven 26-14 in Auburn.

No team at Hillcrest ever won more games in a season than the fourteen victories last year. The 500 points scored by the Jaguars last year were a team record in a single season. The Jaguars hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Smith saw improvement as they won fourteen games following a 5-7 record in 2016.

The defense was very stingy last season as Hillcrest Evergreen ranked 34th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.5 points a game.

Since 2010, Hillcrest has gone a combined 52-42. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Hillcrest has managed to compile a record of 117-144. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 4A and 238th in the AHSAA.

The Jaguars are led by head coach Clinton Smith who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 27-14 over the past three seasons at Hillcrest. Under his direction the Jaguars have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Smith. Coach Smith led Hillcrest to a state championship in 2017.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 27-14 (65.9%).

The Hillcrest Jaguars will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Jaguars move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. The Jaguars have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 73-45 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 4A and 24th in the AHSAA. Hillcrest will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season.

Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season.

The Jaguars enter the 2018 season riding a 12 game winning streak. They have also won 7 consecutive regular season games. Hillcrest has won 10 consecutive region games. They have won 8 straight games on their home turf at Brooks Memorial Stadium. The Jaguars should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

The Jaguars open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Greenville on Friday, August 24 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Greenville Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fourth place in Class 5A region two. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs to Beauregard by a score of 23-20.

Hillcrest and Greenville have met a total of 20 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 3-17-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Greenville winning by a score of 34-6.

Hillcrest returns 3A All-State  kicker Andray Pope. He was named to the second team last season. The Jaguars also return  defensive lineman Jeremy Dees. He was named to the honorable mention team. The Jaguars also return  quarterback Ryan Nettles. He was named to the first team.
